PORT OF LOS ANGELES TERMINAL ISLAND
GRADE SEPARATION
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
STATUS: 80% CD
CLIENT: Port of Los Angeles
Terminal Island Grade Separation (TIGS) consists of designing and constructing a bridge that connects existing streets to Terminal Island Maritime Support Facility (TIMSF), a proposed Port of Los Angeles (POLA) facility for storing empty containers and chassis.
YKD led the planting and irrigation design along the new roadway. The landscape design focuses on preventing slope erosion, enhancing visual interest for vehicles traveling to and from TIMSF, and maintaining continuity with the existing planting. YKD worked closely with the bridge and stormwater engineers to develop a sustainable and cohesive landscape that aligns with both structural and hydrological requirements.
The plant palette highlights drought-tolerant and California native species, creating a resilient and low-maintenance landscape. A diverse mix of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers with varied textures and seasonal blooms ensures year-round visual appeal.
